dc.description This Japanese Arita underglaze blue-and-white kendi has a silver lid and spout of Arabian design. On the bulbous body are two panels with stylised landscapes with huts, vines and flowers surrounded by floral motifs and tendrils. On the slender neck there are small lotus flowerheads. The base is slightly sunken, glazed and unmarked. Three spur marks are visible on the base. A kendi (or gorgelet) is a type of vessel for drinking wine which was fashionable among the Arabs and also the Dutch at Batavia. Sometimes it was used as the basis of a water-pipe or hookah. en_ZA
