dc.description.abstract	In this article, the construct of the city is interpreted as a technological, artificial environment as well as a gendered construct. Within this context, depictions of the archetypal city dweller and the gaze in the urban environment are explored in selected nineteenth- and twentieth-century literary and visual texts.	en
