Abstract

The information age is fast approaching maturity and in stead of being in awe of what it can do the scholarly and information communities are exploiting these new capabilities. The traits that have become ingrained are discussed as the Legacy of the Information Age. New trends resulting from the emerging knowledge society and its values create new opportunities. The following three manifestations are explored: 1. Modern online journals with enhanced capabilities. 2. Online communities. 3. Open archives. The paper was presented at the 6th South African Online Information Meeting, Kempton Park, 21 June 2001.
