Abstract
bekroon is.
Publishers of Afrikaans poetry often receive manuscripts of merit but which do not contain enough poems to justify a solo volume. According to D.J. Opperman, a form of publication between literary journal and a first volume of poetry was required, thereby giving the young poet more exposure and recognition for their work. This idea led to the publication of an anthology of unpublished poets: the two Stiebeuel volumes as well as the Visier collection. In 1997 Tafelberg published the first collection of Nuwe Stemme, since then three more volumes have been published. A total of fourteen poets have debuted following their inclusion in a Nuwe Stemme volume. The Nuwe Stemme volumes have generated five Ingrid Jonker prizes for a poetry debut and four Nuwe Stemme debuts were awarded the Eugène Marais prize. The aim of this study is to investigate the success of the Nuwe Stemme series as forum for upcoming poets. The number of debuts and the prizes received will serve as indicators of the series’ success, as well as its reception by the public, who in this study, is represented by the critic.
