Abstract
In South Africa career facilitation is primarily based on Western principles that do not make provision for the diverse South African population. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible impact of narrative career facilitation on the personal growth of a traditionally disadvantaged gifted student. Postmodern career facilitation can be regarded as an umbrella term from which narrative therapy is derived. A postmodern society implies an open attitude towards other cultures, races, religious or sexual orientations. The central theme of narrative career facilitation is the narration of a client’s life story. It is a way of reliving the past and interpreting current as well as possible future experiences. The study was executed by examining a case study in which a traditionally disadvantaged gifted student took part in narrative career facilitation. I believe that narrative career facilitation can assist researchers to create a clearer image of their clients since the clients and the facilitators are actively involved in the career facilitation process. Clients are empowered to narrate their own life stories, which in turn constitute the basis of their future life stories. Narrative career facilitation motivates clients to explore and understand their own daily challenges.
