dc.description Thesis (B Eng. (Industrial and Systems Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2012. en_US
dc.description.abstract Frozen -, pre-cooked -, microwaveable -, or simply, RM’s are all names with the same meaning and are what the Birds Eye chief executive refer to, as the future of food (Hall, 2012). DeliciouSavings trades in, what will throughout this document be referred to as, RM’s. The company’s work includes the outsourcing of production of meals, as well as the branding, advertising, selling and distribution of the final products. The current client base is expanding faster than expected and necessary systems need to be put in place in order to handle the expanding demand. The company has only been established quite recently and therefore has not yet, designed and implemented advanced processes that will support increased demand. Management believes that it will be beneficial to the company if the operating information is captured in an easily manageable system. It was suggested by management that an information system IS) be designed to improve the quality and flow of information, as well as the way it gets captured. Automation of certain processes is also deemed necessary. This can be achieved when a specific process is dependent on information that can be stored on a system. The aim of the project is to clearly identify problems that the company is experiencing, research possible solutions and choose and implement the best alternative, with the use of engineering strategies. Ideally, the project should aid the company with systems that will secure efficient and effective growth in order to gain a competitive advantage in the market. en_US
