Abstract
The multiword lexical item in Afrikaans can provisionally be defined as a lexical item or lexicalised expression which consists of more than one word. This article is an attempt to give more content to this definition by looking at important defining criteria of the MLl. Amongst others, concepts like fixedness, lexicalisation, idiomaticity, compositionality and semantic simplicity are under discussion.
