Abstract
Mr JA van Tilburg bequeathed his "prentenkabinet" of over 10 000 graphic works to the University of Pretoria
Although nothing is known about the artist the work is an interesting sketch of the ethnomusicologist, Johann Sebastian Brandts Buys (1879-1939). Ethnomusicologist studies the social and cultural aspects of music and dance. Buys died in 1939 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and most of his work, photographs and documents is destroyed during the Japanese occupation of the country during the Second World War. This is one of only three known images of the famous musical academic which survived the war, it was drawn just before he and his wife moved to Indonesia (at that stage still called Jakarta) in 1934.
