Abstract:
Charles Malan (22 Mei 1945-24 Augustus 2011) was in sy lewe betrokke op verskeie terreine in die Afrikaanse letterkunde: aanvanklik as dosent aan die destydse Universiteit van die Oranje Vrystaat vanaf die vroeg 1970s tot 1981; daarna verbonde aan die Raad vir Geesteswetenskaplike Navorsing as hoof van die Sentrum vir Suid-Afrikaanse Letterkundenavorsing (SENSAL). In hierdie hoedanigheid het hy verskeie navorsingsprojekte geïnisieer en self talle navorsingsartikels en boeke gepubliseer. Tot en met sy aftrede in 2000 was hy ook ereprofessor in die Departement Afrikaans aan die Universiteit van Pretoria waar hy veral op nagraadse vlak 'n belangrike bydrae gelewer het. So byvoorbeeld het hy 'n module in Eietydse Kultuurstudie, 'n vakrigting wat hier te lande destyds grootliks onbekend, ingestel. Meesternarratiewe en magsverhoudings in verskillende sosiale verbande het hom intens geïnteresseer.
