“praktiese rede” (verstandigheid of prudentia) uiteengesit.

In this article an interpretation of Martin Versfeld's early book, Oor gode en
afgode (“On gods and idols”) (1948) is presented. The aim of the article is to
reconstruct the most important constant arguments of the five separate essays of
the book and to explain the relations between them. The golden thread of
philosophy of practice and political philosophy is highlighted and exposed
together with the central notion of the “practical reason” (prudence, or
prudentia). It is explained how the notion of “incarnation” subtends prudence and
how the entire complex through the formation of “self-knowledge” contributes to
the orientation of a person in the world. For the young Versfeld this orientation
stands in tension between the decay of Western civilisation and the urgency to
respond to it with a radical ethic. The content of Oor gode en afgode is further
interpreted (1) by situating it within the broader development of Versfeld's work,(2) by clarifying it with the (mostly) unpublished material from the Versfeld
archive, and (3) by commenting on some aspects of the existing history of the
interpretation and reception of the book. Although the main aim of the article is
to clarify the content, in conclusion a number of lines for critical further
questioning of the book are suggested. |
