Abstract

Diabetes care extends beyond glycaemic control, and several interventions to improve diabetes outcome are supported by evidence from large trials. Most of the recommendations included here are based on the Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes of South Africa (SEMDSA) guidelines for type 2 diabetes, and on those of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA).1-3 Guidelines for diabetes management are not rigid, and should be modified according to an individual patient’s co-morbidities and other patient factors.
