Abstract

Computer Science owes it's existence to a technological device, the electronic computer. Major developments in the computer field occurred during the past twenty years, and at an accelerated pace during the last ten years. Hence, Computer Science is a young field of study compared to the majority of other academic fields. It is thus appropriate to choose as a theme for this maugural address: The evolvement of Computer Science as a function of evolution in the computer field.' This evolvement was directed by rapid developments in the technological and application fields, as moderated by the needs of the user community. The totality of computring needs are represented by a theoretical model of information processing. Layered educational requirements are derived from this model. Proposed activities of the Computer Science Department are discussed in relation to available resources and identified requirements.
