Abstract:
The final draft of this project represents a response approach to flooding events on the Cape Flats. These
events have drastic impacts such as loss of human life and economic loss. The response approach was divided
into three stages, where the first stage disaster groups were formed by using an axis system approach. In the
second stage LINGO was used to allocate identified relief centres to the disaster groups. LINGO was also used
in stage three where a routing strategy and supply amount was calculated to each of the disaster groups. By
integrating these three stages an optimal total system approach was created. Humanitarian crises need to be
responded to as quick as possible and by creating an approach beforehand will allow goal to be reached. The
presented approach indicates who should respond to which disaster group, how to respond and how much to
supply to the affected areas on the Cape Flats.
