Abstract

New Country House to be built for Dr. C.F. van der Merwe. A low-hipped roof with deep overhangs and a strong horizontal composition once again evokes Wright. Orientated to the koppie, the house sits comfortably on the site with an inside-outside connection afforded again by verandahs and terraces. Harrop-Allin describes this house in the same breath as the Van Wouw house (1975:34 – 35) in terms of progression towards an organic architecture and also includes a description of the house by Eaton in his own words (which was published in the May 1946 edition of SAAR). Groundfloor plan, north elevation & longitudinal section. Sleeping porch, 3 chimneys, big veranda. See also 07531.
