Abstract:
The aim of the project was the development of an efficient turbulence model for numerical simulation of strongly swirling incompressible jet flow. As point of departure a general review is given of turbulence modelling in numerical flow solutions. An existing numerical model was calibrated against pipe-flow data and available turbulence models from literature were subsequently evaluated on the basis of experimental data. This preliminary study serves as basis for the development of an applicable turbulence model. During the modelling process particular attention was paid to modifications to effectively accommodate rotation and anisotropic viscosity in the fluid. The study is concluded with an evaluation of the efficiency of the model, and points to the fact that the model is able to predict turbulent viscosity for various flow conditions in strongly swirling jet flow in an economical and accurate way.
