Styan se bewering dat "The muted print on the page is shorn of all specificity ...
dc.description.abstract English: The twofold purpose of this dissertation is an investigation into the drama text and the theatre text and the various awards and prizes available for original Afrikaans dramas. constantly in use, are given. Explanations of terms The first chapter deals with the differences and similarities of the drama text and theatre text; the disadvantages and advantages of both, and the changes which take place from drama text to theatre text. Reception Aesthetics and Semiotics are also discussed as possible approaches to a study of this complicated system of communication. The necessity of awarding prizes to original Afrikaans dramas is dis= cussed. The conclusion is reached that the drama is not as often rewarded as work of prose or poetry. In some instances no award had been made throughout the existence of an award or prize. It was also found that only three of the twelve awards under discussion, awarded the theatre text, whereas the rest awarded the drama text as literary work of art with only cursory observance of the theatre text. In the next chapter the productions of the five Councils for the Performing Arts are analysed to ascertain how often award-winning Afrikaans drama texts become theatre text. It was found that 15% of the productions were original Afrikaans drama texts. Only 22,5% of these 15% were award winners, whereas 77,5% were plays not awarded at all. Of the total number of plays produced by these Councils only 3,5% were award-winning Afrikaans drama texts; 52,3% of the awardwinning Afrikaans drama texts were not used by any of the Councils during the period 1964-1986. A discussion of the drama text, Toe hulle die Vierkleur op Rooigrond gehys het, by Henriette Grove, follows. The choice of this drama text is based on the fact that although it has received several awards, it has never been produced by any of the Councils for the Performing Arts. The conclusion is drawn that the drama text received the awards as a literary work of art and not for its possibilities as a theatre text. Chapter five is a discussion of Die Koggelaar by Pieter Fourie. The choice of this play was prompted by the fact that it was the first to receive the prestigious SACPAC Award. The award was given to the play on the grounds of the possible theatre text rather than a literary work of art. The Styan dictum that "The muted print on the page is shorn of all specificity ... " (1963: 27), is proved by the fact that so many aspects generating meaning can only be experienced through the theatre text. This strengthens the point of view that awards for original Afrikaans drama texts ought to be based on the theatre text, functioning as a total structure of meaning, rather than on a drama text. Die Koggelaar was awarded on the possibilities as a theatre text rather than as a literary work of art. In chapter six the founding, aims and contribution of the Campus Drama Festival are discussed. It is concluded that this Festival encourages the production of successful Afrikaans theatre texts. A discussion of one of these theatre texts Aku vang 'n ster by Nico Luwes, follows. The conclusion is reached that this Festival sueceeds in encouraging the creation of original Afrikaans drama texts which are both dramatically and literarily satisfying. en_US
