Abstract:
Painting by Gordon Leith entitled "Palace of the Arts", the entry with which he won the first Herbert Baker Scholar award in 1911. It depicts a Renaissance-style great hall with coffered vaults and marble Corinthian columns supporting elaborate entablatures. The entry was accompanied by an essay, "The Principles dominating Architectural Design in South Africa", and the award enabled Leith to study at the British School in Rome and the British School in Athens.
