Abstract:
Rudolph Daniël Bigalke was a pillar of the Veterinary profession, with his legacy of scientific excellence, high work ethic and standards, and unwavering professionalism. He did pioneer research on Besnoitia besnoiti and was part-time lecturer and later Honorary Professor from 1985-1988. He played a crucial role in the establishment and organisation of the SAVA History Committee, where he was Chair from 1996 to 2008, Secretary from 2008 to 2019, and a Director of the successor Veterinary History Society from 2019 to 2024. He also played a major part in establishing the National Veterinary Museum. A list of his appointments, awards, and attributes, reflects Rudolph Bigalke's successful career and leadership over his seven decades of serving the Veterinary profession.
