Abstract:
The history and background of Merino farming in South Africa, and the development of the breed are addressed. Merino farming started off as a need for meat as a staple food, which then progressed into a large-scale adoption of wool farming. Farming practice discussions include theft, predation, veld management, diseases, and their prevention and control. This chapter touches on legislation and the founding and development of societies, boards, and associations in the wool and sheep industries.
