Abstract:
This PhD thesis titled La Traduction dans l’enseignement/apprentissage du Français Langue Étrangère en Afrique du Sud (Translation in the Teaching/Learning of French as a Foreign Language in South Africa) examines the role that translation as a didactic tool can play in teaching French as a foreign language in South Africa as well as the problems it can pose for teachers and learners. The interpretation of data collected in five secondary schools allows the researcher to conclude that translation can be a useful tool to teach foreign languages in foreign language classrooms if teachers are adequately trained and equipped with a renewed conception of translation based on theoretical advances in the field of translation studies.
