Abstract:
The structural design codes particular to the various structural materials appear to have developed in isolation. Structural mechanics, methods of analysis and limiting-stress-based calculations are common to all materials. In this paper the authors emphasise commonalities in the formulation of member resistance for various structural materials and suggest the possibility of a unified structural design code. However, the authors do not attempt to propose a complete revised, unified code.
Serviceability issues in particular are not dealt with, although the generic formulation may be extended to all code requirements. By considering the most common structural materials, some remarkable similarities between structural members of different materials are demonstrated. Load-bearing masonry is not considered, as it falls outside the scope of expertise of the authors.
