Abstract:
Biography of the veterinarian, Stuart Hargreaves. The biography includes information about his education and career, scientific contributions and writings, homages and distinctions. Dr Hargreaves was a veterinarian with over 35 years of experience in the control of livestock diseases in southern Africa, with 16 years as Director of Veterinary Services, then the last four years as Principal Director of Livestock and Veterinary Services of Zimbabwe. This latter post gave him overall authority of both national animal production and animal health issues. The bulk of his work was in Zimbabwe but owing to the regional incidence of most trans-boundary occurring diseases, it included involvement with all other countries in the region. Although the most important disease was foot and mouth disease he was personally involved in a wide range of other important diseases, including anthrax, trypanosomiasis, rabies, Newcastle disease, tick-borne diseases and African swine fever.
