Abstract:
Prof C.M. Veary was a longstanding staff member of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria from 1985 to 2004 when he retired and played a significant role in developing the field of Veterinary Public Health (VPH). He obtained his BVSc-degree at the Faculty in 1963, a diploma in Veterinary Public Health in 1978 and an MMedVet (Hyg) degree in 1991. In 1995 Prof Veary obtained reciprocal registration at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). After being an assistant in private practices in Johannesburg and Durban in small animal practice he served as Veterinary Meat Hygiene Officer and later as state veterinarian at the Durban abattoir between 1969 and 1979. During this time, he was also registered with the Jockey Club of South Africa as a race course veterinarian for the Greyville and Clairwood Park courses. Between 1982 and 1985 he served as Regional Director for Meat Hygiene in the former Transvaal. In 1985 he was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Faculty’s former Department of Veterinary Public Health and full Professor in 1992. From 1995 to 1999 he was Professor and Head of the former Department of Animal and Community Health in the Faculty and between 1999 and 2004 served as Professor in Meat Hygiene and Hazard Analysis (HACCP) as well as subject coordinator for Veterinary Public Health until his retirement in 2004. Prof Veary also served in various professional bodies including as a President of the South African Veterinary Association (SAVA) (1984 – 1986), Life Member of the South African Veterinary Association, Member of the Board of Trustees of the South African Veterinary Foundation (1971 to 1996), and from 1989 until recently, the South African Veterinary Association representative on the World Association of Veterinary Food Hygienists. He also served as Chairperson of the Education Committee of the South African Veterinary Council from 1992 to 2004 and as examiner, moderator and external examiner for the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases (DVTD), the SAVC and the then Department of National Education. Prof Veary has written and published numerous articles, book reviews and chapters for books and presented at many local and international congresses including Australia, Thailand, Zambia, The Netherlands, Germany and England.
