Abstract:
In 2014 the South African Road Federation took up the challenge that the National Department of Transport implemented through the Decade of Action initiative and as a Road Engineering Federation after reviewing international Road Safety initiatives found that countries that implemented a Road Safety Audit training campaign reduced the number of fatal crashes by improving road safety engineering capacity in the country. The Road Safety Audit training course aids Design Engineers better understand the Road Safety risks that may be contained within their designs. In 2014 SARF recruited Stefan Lotter a Road Safety Audit specialist from Malawi to run a series of training courses in the major centres of South Africa. The Engineering Council of South Africa accredited the 5 day course; this is a SANRAL requirement for engineers that tender on doing Road Safety Audits on SANRAL contracts. The past, current and future Road Safety Audit training programme will be discussed in this presentation.
