Abstract:
The focus of this study is to analyse the operations of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
diversion, from Robinson Deep Land ll site situated in City of Johannesburg (COJ), to a
privately owned Interwaste land ll, which is 90 km from Robinson Deep Land ll. Pikitup
is the o cial integrated waste management service provider to the City of Johannesburg.
Pikitup maintain six land ll sites, including the Robinson Deep Land ll sites. This study
will compare three waste diversion scenarios namely; diversion by road only, diversion
by road to a Transfer Station (TS) to rail transport, and road to TS to dirty Materials
Recovery Facility (MRF) to rail transportation. This study is based on the logistics of
transporting MSW, and identifying the resources required to divert MSW from Robinson
Deep Land ll site. MSW data from Pikitup and the City of Cape Town will be considered
in this study. A feasibility study will be conducted to determine the best waste diversion
method for Pikitup. The three scenarios will be compared based on the cost of the trans-
portation mode, the amount of waste that can be diverted from Robinson Deep Land ll
per day and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of each scenario. The study
looks separately at road operations, and a combination of railroad operations by outlining
the various planning and logistical requirements for diverting MSW from Robinson Deep
to a privately owned Interwaste land ll in Delmas (Klinkerstene).
