Clown is the most recent work by Coetzee in the University of Pretoria's Art Collection and the last of his works which he kept for himself. As the last in a group of six portraits, this small portrait of a smiling clown hung above Coetzee's bed in his Tulbagh home and was looking down on him when he passed away at the age of 71 in November 2000.
