Description:
Coetzee used the rose as a motif in
his paintings as early as the 1940s.
The image of the rose is used in his
small portraits, on the tables of his
still-life paintings, as well as in the
background of his avant-garde
artworks. His depiction of roses
went through many transformations
from being life-like subjects of still life
paintings, to the rose being
depicted as an abstract worm-like
form.
