In this painting of Hermes, the messenger of the gods in Greek mythology is shown partly hidden from the viewer and his face is partially missing - a reference to Hermes as a guide to the underworld. The upper portion of his face is obscured by a veil, symbolic of him being the patron of boundaries and of travellers who cross them. To the right is Hermes' wingéd helmet which helps him to carry messages for the gods.
