During his student years, Coetzee was known for his small studies of women he affectionately called his poppies (dolls). When his lecturer Marjorie Long, saw these fantastical portraits she compared it to the work of French artists like Pierre Bonnard (1867- 1947) and Jean-Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940).
