Description:
As Spirit of Sport (1917) was the most recognizable of Eloff’s sports figures, the later creations of the Discus Thrower (1924) and Javelin Thrower (1924) were also assumed titles for Spirit of Sport, which often led to confusion. Since Discus Thrower was made as a set with the Javelin Thrower in France in1924 these were unknown. To compound the problem, the discus figure had been posthumously cast in South Africa, and the original plaster’s arms had accidentally broken off when packaged.
