dc.description This plate commemorates the 100 year reign of the Dutch Royal House. This round black tin-glazed plate on a red clay is decorated in high relief with a lion sitting inside a fence with eleven orange trees and an open gate at the bottom. On each side of the gate are the dates “1813” and “1913”. This central relief is surrounded by a stylized foliate meander and directly above the lion is a golden rising sun with the words “Schud af, Sta op, Word Vry”. The base of the plate is sunken, unglazed and marked with the impressed signature of “Willem Brouwer” and the date 16/11/15. The fenced-in lion represents the Dutch Royal House as the guardian of Holland’s borders. The orange trees and golden rising sun are symbols of the Royal House of the Netherlands. The Dutch inscription says: “Pull yourself together, arise and become free”. Although the plate commemorates an event in 1913, it was only made two years later in 1915. It was made at the factory “Vredelust” of Willem C. Brouwer Ceramics in Leidendorp. en_ZA
