Sir Herbert John Baker (09:06:1862 -04:02:1946).
South Africa's
best-known architect, started his South African career in 1892 and
thus provided the basis for a number of works and ongoing studies
both in South Africa and abroad. His South African career spanned
from pre-Anglo-Boer War days into the challenging years of post-war
reorganisation and Union in 1910.
The Herbert Baker Collection of the Department of Architecture,
University of Pretoria has, as provenance, the Geoffrey Pearse
Papers (from the John Fassler Collection donated by Mira Fassler
Kamstra), the John Cleland Papers (donated by Joanna Walker as
material sourced for a prospective post graduate study not
completed).
