dc.description.abstract |
In 1911 the farm Armoedsvlakte ("Poverty flats") - so named because no cattle could be farmed there as a result of the disease lamsiekte (botulism) - was offered to Arnold Theiler for a year to conduct experiments. The farm is in the district Vryburg. The cause of lamsiekte was not known. The farm was later purchased by the Government and a small laboratory and house were built on it. Sir Arnold Theiler spent a year there in 1919. He was appointed as Director of "Lamziekte" Research, with H.W.R. King as his secretary and Th. Meyer as technician as well as farm labourers to handle the cattle and to erect the fencing to camp off the various experimental batches. |
