The aim of this study was to explore and describe black critical care nurses’ perception of organ donation and organ transplantation. Qualitative methodology was used in this descriptive, explorative and contextual study. The population was black critical care nurses working in Gauteng Province. Participants had to have exposure in their work to situations where organ harvesting or transplantation was done. Data gathering was done using in depth interviews. The study resulted in six themes that emerged and these reflected positive as well as negative feelings. Participants agreed that there is a lack of information regarding organ donation and transplantation. Culture is also sometimes a barrier. The black community, both potential donors and professional nurses, need more information. The main recommendation of the study is that information be made available regarding organ donation and transplantation. Copyright |
