Factors that impact on adherence to antiretroviral therapy are often entwined and poorly understood. South Africa is severely affected by HIV/AIDS and on the brink of a national antiretroviral roll-out. It became important to determine these factors. A qualitative research design was used to further explore this subject and act as a basis for further research. Significant correlation was found with international data. Most participants in this study indicated that traditional beliefs did not interfere with their adherence, but in the presence of inadequate knowledge regarding HIV, patients may revert thereto. Culture puts women in a submissive role and consequently reduces their negotiating power. Treatment preparation and HIV education, combined with the patient-provider relationship, were considered important. Identifying these factors and managing it through open communication channels and reliable access to information, remains a challenge. |
