Juan Bornman PhD; M(Communication Pathology) ; B. Logopaedia) is a registered speech-language therapist and audiologist and professor and Director of the Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication , at the University of Pretoria. For the past 23 years she has been actively involved in the disability field as trainer, researcher and activist for one of the most vulnerable groups within the disability spectrum: those who are unable to speak. Her training and research comprise a variety of topics within rehabilitation, by exploring strategies that increase participation, have an evidence-base, and is sustainable with a long-term impact. She also focusses on rehabilitation as a human rights issue for individuals with disability and how to ensure equal access to justice for individuals with little or no speech. She has published more than 30 papers in international ISI-accredited journals and book chapters (some with a research focus and some with a clinical focus) and two books "Just the same on the Inside” aimed at demystifying the 10 most common types of disabilities for children, and “Believe that All can Achieve” about increasing classroom participation in learners with special needs in an inclusive setting, aimed at teachers and done numerous presentations locally and internationally on the topic of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Her third book, with international colleague Dr Diane Bryen, entitled “Stop the violence against people with disabilities: An International resource” has been published on Kindle.

The Centre for Augmentative & Alternative Communication is committed to making a difference in the communication and life-skills of people with severe disabilities, and in particular those complex communication needs, by:

• Multi-professional and community training
• Research in the fields of severe disabilities, early intervention and augmentative & alternative communication
• Influencing policy making impacting on the lives of people with severe disabilities.
