Abstract:
The article discusses the trends in farm employment over time in South Africa. This is followed by the presentation of six case studies of specific commodities and regions with the view to establishing the potential emlpoyment effects of various changes in the policy environment. The article ends with an assessment of selected aspects of the wider environment in which the sector operates, to ascertain the extent to which such policy shifts are feasible, i.e. whether the measured effects in employment generation are likely to happen.
