Eaton’s entry for the design competition for the Afrikaanse Taalmonument [Afrikaans Language Monument] is riddled with symbolic gesture. While the shape represents a fire torch (‘fakkel’), the structure is literally terminated with the use of fire. The conical shape seems to grow organically from the earth, with ‘bloem plaveisel’ – paving representing flowers. In a strange coincidence, the structure resembles a monumental version of the conical fountain at Pretoria Boys’ High School. Interesting to note, architect Jan van Wijk (1926 – 2006), who had spent his practical student year in the offices of Eaton at the end of the 1940’s, won the competition. The Afrikaanse Taalmonument as designed by Van Wijk, was constructed in 1975. Its organic forms and rich symbolism make it a landmark in the discipline.
