dc.description | A ship at dock with three figures on the sailing boat and four on the shore, three other boats is on the water. To the left is a fence and a fishing pole. The painting only signed with the artist’s initials “P.C.D.” has long been un-attributed to any artist due to a wrong listing of the initials as “RJD”. Dommerson, also spelled Dommersen, was part of a family of artists that painted during the last part of the 19th Century. The specific painting was created just before Dommerson went to England and stayed there until his death, which is officially in 1908 but some sources have as late as 1922. The painting is that of fishermen leaving for the catch, there are three ships that already left and one at the bank with the fishermen greeting their loved ones. Interesting to note is the orange flag hanging from the masts of the ships which shows the support to the Dutch Royal House. The painting is one of a series done by Dommerson of small sailing fishing boats at Monnickendam (original Dutch spelling), a town in North Holland on the Ijsselmeer. | en |
dc.description.abstract | Mr JA van Tilburg bequeathed more than 400 paintings to the University of Pretoria. The painting only signed with the artist’s initials “P.C.D.” has long been un-attributed to any artist due to a wrong listing of the initials as “RJD”. The painting is one of a series done by Dommerson (1834-1908) of small sailing fishing boats at Monnickendam (original Dutch spelling), a town in North Holland on the Ijsselmeer. The town of Monnickendam housed a large artist colony during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. | en |
