dc.description.abstract The intimate and symbiotic relationship between religion and culture postulated by various sociologists of religion is accepted as backdrop for an elaboration of the principle of the church being in the world but not of it. The question whether a peoples church 'volkskerk' has any special cultural responsibilities is also addressed. Finally it is contended that modern, secularised culture is controlled by a civil ideology akin to civil religion. en
