In South Africa. the use of crumb rubber modified (CRM) bitumen has increased over the years as increased traftic loads have resulted in higher performance requirements. Empirical binder characterisation of CRM bitumen remains widespread internationally, even though empirical properties cannot predict asphalt mix performance. Advanced rheological characterisation of CRM bitumen using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) is a superior alternative once the morphological challenge of the binary binder system has been overcome. This paper documents a method for the rheological analysis of CRM bitumen with ageing and attempts to relate such characterisation to the performance of CRM bitumen in an asphalt mix.
