dc.description.abstract Imagination and creative involvement in the events of the past are some ways to introduce Cultural History students to their fi eld of study. This study investigates how second year Cultural History students at the University of Pretoria expressed their knowledge and understanding of the module on South African spiritual culture in the 19th century:customs, beliefs and science in texts. Students had to integrate their knowledge, understanding and experience of the total module content into a single courtship story. During this process, they had to transfer themselves from the highly-technological 21st century in which they are fi nding themselves, to that of the 19th century pioneer. Can one deduct from an analysis of the texts that they were successful in doing this? Did this creative exercise succeed in involving students in the lives, thoughts and emotions of the pioneer? en_US
