The aim is to demonstrate that the study of an object and the creator thereof can provide the cultural historian and museologist with insight into the period from which that object dates. The inverse, i.e. research on the cultural trends of a certain period, may in turn contribute to the facilitation of the interpretation of a person or object from that period. This investigation started with the discovery of an image of the Salt-tub in an encyclopaedia. Further investigation led to the ‘discovery’ of Cellini as person and diverse aspects of the Renaissance in Italy. Gradually the Salt-tub assumed different dimensions as a richly embellished household article, and emerged as the manifestiation of the spirit of an era. |
