We look at the city daily, but what do we see? It is quite important who the 'we' is that is looking at the city, and how we look, what our own life histories are and what our outlook on life is. Strangers see the city very differently from citizens, mainly because visitors experience it as new. The impression that citizens have of their dwelling place is influenced by the quality of their lives, for example concerning their job, circle of friends, and level of involvement in the development of the city. But an image of a city is also determined by the reality of a person’s beliefs, and by the framework within which our environment exists. Is it neutral territory, or do we also meet our fellow-men there, i.e. is his or her existence touched by how we build cities?] |
