Abstract:
A DISSECTION OF ANATOMY
In a review of the origin, the extent and the
present status of the subject of Anatomy, with
special reference to the Department of Anatomy
of the University of Pretoria, the speaker analysis
the following aspects:
1. THE HISTORY OF THE ORIGINS AND PRESENT STATUS OF ANATOMY
The speaker briefly deals with the conditions
in Egypt, Messopotamia and Greece
which led up to the formulation of Science
of Anatomy.
The further expansion of Anatomy into its
present day dimensions and its application to
modern medicine is discussed.
2. THE FOUNDING OF THE DEPARTMENT
OF ANATOMY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
PRETORIA.
The circumstances preceding the institution
of the Department of Anatomy at the
University of Pretoria are briefly described and
the development of the Department under its
first three heads, Prof. Schepers, Prof. De Haas
and Prof. Muller is discussed with special reference
to the expansion of the activities in
relation to education, research and administration.
3. THE PRACTICE OF ANATOMY AT PRESENT
The degree to which the field of Anatomy
with its numerous facets is pursued at present. is dealt with in relation to the various courses
offered at the University of Pretoria.
4. FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
The speaker gives an exposition of what
he considers to be the main direction in which
Anatomy should be allowed to develop against
the background of the demands of the country
as a whole.
