dc.description The Post-Proceedings of this Festschrift will be formally published in The South African Computer Journal number 41.
dc.description.abstract This paper provides a brief overview of the use of ontologies in Computer Science and argues that one of the main reasons for its popularity in recent years is that it has become possible, in practice, to perform a variety of reasoning tasks over large ontologies. We also, briefly, consider some of the challenges to be overcome before it can be seen as having reached the status of an established technology.
